An Armed Society is a Polite Society

Forward: I base this discussion on my own personal belief of owning firearms for the reason of personal preservation.

Many individuals will read the following statement and revolt in disgust. I am not one of those. My ideals are based on personal events, opinions, and real life situations. I own many firearms, and i carry them frequently. I mostly equip myself with a Glock 17 and i carry it in a holster on my Hip.

(This is completely LEGAL in Utah, it is called OPEN CARRY, as long as you have the chamber of the pistol empty you can carry it openly. NOTE: The magazine of the gun can be loaded, but you must be 3 Steps away from Firing. 1- Load a Round, 2-Switch off the safety, 3-Fire.)

You do not see this often, but it does  happen, and their are many online communities that are in support of such acts. www.utahconcealedcarry.com has a Forum for Open Carry as well as Concealed carry.

OK, so back to the original topic. An Armed Society is a Polite Society. Lets break this down, if everyone was carrying a gun, people would be less likely to get into aggravated arguements, disputes, tiffs, ect. ect.

The quote is by Robert A Heinlein, and he mentions “Manners are good when one may have to back up his acts with his life.”

The basis of this rests in a few instances, in the times of the “Wild West” just about everyone was armed in some way or another. Disputes happened, but they mostly ended in bloodshed, and they were for good reasons. (for the most part).

Arming citizens is a good idea. Take for instance countries that have banned guns completely or made them extremely hard to reach by honest, law abiding citizens. The only people who will posses guns are NON Law abiding citizens who want to do the UNarmed people harm. Also, think about all the Country leaders who banned guns, what were they trying to accomplish? Communism? Dictatorship? Tyranny? Hilter, Stalin, Castro, they all didn’t allow guns. Here is a perfect example.

“The laws adopted by the Weimar Republic intended to disarm Nazis and Communists were sufficiently discretionary that the Nazis managed to use them against their enemies once they were in power.” In other words, they didn’t need to pass additional laws. The Nazis did pass a weapons law in 1938, but that only added restrictions to the previous law, especially for Jews and other “non-citizens.”

If you were about to Tyranize a country such as hilter did, would you allow them to have guns? I think not.

Now assume the United States was COMPLETELY armed. Meaning everyone had a gun, and everyone knew it. How many people would get car jacked? How many peoples houses would get broken into? How many people would get jumped for their wallet?

Who here would want to try a violent crime against someone you knew had a gun?

I rest my case,

Si vis pacem, para bellum (If you wish for peace, prepare for war.)

- I have made no attempts to confirm the statistics or the truth in the following comment, but feel they may raise points that can be debated for/or against Doug’s post. -

In 1911, Turkey established gun control. From 1915 to 1917, 1.5 million Armenians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.
—————————
In 1929, the Soviet Union established gun control. From 1929 to 1953, about 20 million dissidents, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.
——————————
China established gun control in 1935. From 1948 to 1952, some 20 million political dissidents, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.
—————————-
Germany established gun control in 1938 and from 1939 to 1945, a total of 13 million Jews and others who were unable to defend themselves were rounded up and exterminated.
——————————
Cambodia established gun control in 1956. From 1975 to 1977, one million ‘educated’ people, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.
—————————–
Guatemala established gun control in 1964. From 1964 to 1981, some 100,000 Mayan Indians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.
——————————
Uganda established gun control in 1970. From 1971 to 1979, 300,000 Christians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.
——————————
Defenseless people rounded up and exterminated in the 20th Century because of gun control: 56 million.

It has now been 12 months since gun owners in Australia were forced by new law to surrender 640,381 personal firearms to be destroyed by their own government. A program costing Australia taxpayers more than $500 million dollars. The first year results are now in:

Australia-wide, homicides are up 3.2 percent

Australia-wide, assaults are up 8.6 percent

Australia-wide, armed robberies are up 44 percent (yes, 44 percent)!

In the state of Victoria alone, homicides with firearms are now up 300 percent. Note that while the law-abiding citizens turned them in, the criminals did not, and criminals still possess their guns!

I think guns are fine, but they shouldn’t be so easy to obtain. I believe there should be strict background checks and required guns safety courses completed before the purchase is granted. In addition, I believe convicted felons should all be denied the right to own a gun. Also, people with substance abuse problems and certain psychological disorders should also have consent from a psychiatrist before owning a gun. Bottom line, gun ownership should be strictly monitored by society and that right should be taken away if that person poses a threat.

Religion as Social Control through Authority

Contemporary historians discuss social control from the perspective of religion by exploring the enormous potential and applied power religion has to influence the individual as well as society at large though dogma and indoctrination. Perhaps the only tie stronger is the family unit; however the two (religion and family) often work in concert to create [...]
